UPVC – A Revolutionary Material for Doors & Windows

UPVC, Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride, is a rigid water resistant polymer, used for external building work. The main applications of UPVC are in window and door construction, forming fascias, and making of water resistant goods.

These are preferred because :

  • These are weather proof, storm proof, noise proof, strong insulating power and keeps your space hot and insulated.
  • Its big range of shapes and sizes gets fitted in all kinds of windows.
  • These UPVC are available in the market in a variety of colors.
  • It is anti rust and thus does not corrode.
  • They are stylish, flexible, easy to install and fabricate and need low maintenance and are durable.
  • They have good aesthetics, air tightness, and water tightness. It has high and strong quality, long life, secure and is easy to clean.
  • There is a huge variety of style and pattern of UPVC windows available in the market.

Manufacturing UPVC windows :

All UPVC windows start out as plastic powder at the profile extrusion plant, namely unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (UPVC). The plastic powder is then heated up and injected through a mold called a die which means, the PVC then takes its shape; it is then rapidly cooled using water and when the profile reaches 6m lengths it is cut and packaged.

Usually people buy in the 6 meter lengths of window profile, cut them to size and weld the joins to make the final product, UPVC windows. They then add window hardware to the frames such as high security locks, glass, window handles and friction stays to hold the openers in place.

Comparison between steel/aluminium and UPVC windows :

Steel / Aluminium Windows UPVC Windows
1-Maintenance
Need painting over long periods of usage. Requires no painting; only routine cleaning.
2-Durability under Extreme Weather
Can start looking ugly after sustained exposure to sun. Have UV resistant blend thus, do not fade under sustained exposure to sun.
3-Monsoon Resistance
Allow rainwater to come in due to poor insulation and installation. Have a built in special rain drain mechanism.
4-Resistance to Wind
Due to poor structural strength and insulation they tend to rattle in face of strong winds leading to whistling sounds. They are multi chambered and reinforced with steel or a hurricane bar.
5-Environmental Impact
Frames use large amounts of energy in production; not an environment friendly choice. Use less energy at the time of production; hence more environment friendly.
6-Aesthetics
Can Look Cold And Out Of Proportion. Have elegant looks; enhances both; the exteriors and interiors of the building.
7-Energy Conservation
Being metal they conduct heat energy. Poor sealing and imperfect installation leads to lot of energy loss. Poor conductors of heat. They have excellent sealing with multiple point locks and fusion welded joints; hence conserve energy.
8-Sound Insulation
Poorly sealed with mechanical joints and poorly installed leading to poor sound insulation. Fusion welded, lock at multiple points and double sealed leading to excellent sound insulation.
9-Termite resistance
Do not attract termites. Not prone to termites.
10-Sunlight
Hollow frames lead to poor structural strength leading to more members and lesser sunlight. Steel reinforced; hence structurally strong. They allow large sizes leading to more sunlight.
11-Addition to value of home
Require lot of maintenance; hence do not add to value of home. Have a long life and do not require any maintenance. Hence they add to the long term value of the home.
12-Ventilation
Have more frames; hence lesser area for ventilation. Have a long are structurally strong and require less frames allowing more ventilation.
13-Ease of use
Have poor quality hardware which does not last long; leading to difficult usage experience. Use international quality hardware that allows easy use of windows.
